Background knowledge: lathes

A conventional lathe is a machine tool. With the machining process of turning, rotating bodies such as cylindrical or flat surfaces – but also more complex shapes such as conical and spherical surfaces – can be produced. In this process, the workpiece carries out the cutting movement through rotation. The cutting tool carries out the feed movement with a tool slide on which it is clamped and thus removes the shavings. Compared to CNC machines, conventional lathes have no control system. The axes can only be operated by means of handwheels or via automatic feed.

Construction of a conventional lathe

In general, a conventional lathe consists of three main components: Frame, drive and tool guide. The frame is solidly designed because lathes are subjected to high forces. Welded constructions and monolithic casting racks are generally used for a long service life. The drive consists of an electric motor and a gearbox, as well as the spindle and tailstock. When purchasing a used conventional or CNC lathe, it should be ensured that the concentricity is as precise as possible, and that the tailstock is free of clearance, to guarantee high precision in the production of the workpieces. The tool guide consists primarily of a rail and a turning spindle. The tools are guided with the spindle along the rail.
